Silent Disco

I first experienced a concept called the "silent disco" at Bonnaroo a couple years ago. 2 of Athens smaller and more low-key music venues have taken on the trend here in Athens.
Highwire Lounge, located on Hull Street down town, started doing a silent disco on Saturdays last year. The night was so popular they now have it Thursdays, too. I first heard about it by word of mouth last year and ended up going that night. I haven't been able to find much about it on their social media, making it more of a find for Athens locals and students. The experience is a phenomenon on social media as I will see my friends and people I follow posting Snap Chat and Instagram stories every night that it is going on. The network of UGA students has started to pick up on the event through these platforms, and the silent disco is super packed every week. You pay $1 for headphone rentals and they have a DJ playing 2 different channels. Your headphones turn a different color based on what channel your listening to, so you know who's dancing to the same song as you. The DJ takes requests and plays a variety of popular, rap, or oldies music that people are familiar with and can sing along to. If you take your headphones off, the room is completely silent except for the sounds of people singing along.

The Globe now does a silent disco on most Wednesday nights. They advertise with events on their Facebook page like this one:
I went and checked it out this past Wednesday for the first time. This week was super cool and not usually how the silent disco is there. A few local rappers performed, and instead of the normal music played in the headphones, they played the beats that the rappers were freestyling to while they rapped into a microphone. This group performs all around Athens at different venues, but decided to take on a silent disco twist at the Globe. If you haven't tried out the Silent Disco yet, make your way to one of these 2 venues for an awesome experience 3 nights a week!
